With a location at the intersection of Interstate 80 and Harlem Avenue, Tinley Park is just a 35-minute drive or short train ride from downtown Chicago and is located in both Cook and Will Counties in Illinois.  It is one of the fastest growing suburbs South of Chicago and in 2009 was selected by Business Week as the best place to raise a family in America.  Tinley Park has been successful in attracting prime business and hospitality industry development.  Along with the emergence of award-winning restaurants, a popular Convention Center and a large selection of high-profile hotels, Tinley Park is home to major shopping areas serving the growing community and the surrounding region.  It is home to the The First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre (formerly named “The World Music Theater” and “Tweeter Center”) which seats 28,000 and brings the biggest concert acts from the world to Tinley Park.

Recently, the downtown area was revitalized with the construction of an architecturally outstanding train station and an inviting town square that has made this downtown area a popular venue for numerous community activities, attracting visitors from the entire area.  Tinley Park has outstanding schools, recreational facilities, neighborhoods, and has a vibrant business community. 

Settlement of the area which now comprises Tinley Park began in the 1820s by emigrants from the Eastern United States.  Prior to that, the area was primarily occupied by the Potawatomi Indians.  German settlers became predominant in area by the 1840s, and the village was originally established in 1853 as "Bremen".  When railroads expanded rapidly in the late 19^th century, the village was situated right on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad line.  This had a great impact on the village, which was renamed to Tinley Park in honor of the first station agent, Samuel Tinley, Sr.  The official incorporation of Tinley Park even occurred at the train depot.

Tinley Park’s first factory was started in 1905 and local businessmen established an electric utility in 1909.  A soda bottling facility operated in Tinley Park until the 1950s.  Between 1970 and 1994, Tinley Park was an area of rapid expansion with over 11,000 housing units constructed.  Currently, the population is estimated at over 58,000.  About 78% of the population are of Polish descent, up from about 20% in 2000. 

After its centennial (1992), Tinley Park from the late 20th century to the present has been focused on renovation of its downtown historic district. The historic district is made up of the village's original 1892 boundaries. In this district, landowners are encouraged to maintain the historic edifices or to create new, historically friendly facades for otherwise non-historic buildings built in the last 30 years.
