About Palos Hills, Illinois
The City of Palos Hills, Illinois has its roots as a farming community originally known as North Palos and is located 40 minutes southwest of Chicago in Cook County. After World War II ended, commercial home building began and the first fire house was built in 1946. In 1957, the North Palos Community Council was formed which resulted in a referendum to discuss the need for a charter, since more and more families began to move into the area. In 1958, residents voted to incorporate the City of Palos Hills and the 1st mayor was elected – Charleton Ihde.
Palos Hills has grown since that time, building various churches and schools, numerous businesses, and the Green Hills Library. Many major improvements have been made since the 1980’s such as new roadways, expanded park services, and a community resource department serving the needs of all age groups. Now a city of 17,500 residents, Palos Hills has become a family oriented community that its’ citizens can be proud of.
